Stem Cell Therapy And COVID-19
We have discussed an array of things in our previous blog posts that we can do on our own to boost our immune system. However, we want to be very clear that we are not stating stem cells can treat or cure any infection or disease, including COVID-19. We do want to share the breakthrough research in regenerative medicine from around the world that has been happening currently. China is utilizing the amazing properties of regenerative medicine and stem cell technology in the therapy of people critically ill with the coronavirus. As of now, there have been multiple reported cases of patients receiving stem cells while in serious condition that have now recovered and been discharged from the hospital.
Stem Cells have been a topic of medical research for years. Our bodies are made of all different kinds of cells and most cells have a specific job to do for us. A stem cell is a cell with the unique ability to develop into any specialized cell type in the body. Stem cells provide new cells for the body as it grows, and replace specialized cells that are damaged or lost. They have two unique properties that enable them to do this. First, stem cells can divide over and over again to produce new healthy cells. Secondly, as they divide they can change into the other types of cells that make up the body to renew parts of the body that need it. When used in therapy, stem cells can replace lost or damaged cells that our bodies can’t replace naturally. This therapy is being used for a variety of different applications including treatment of the coronavirus, boosting immunity, and regenerating cells to a healthier form for those who need it. Stem cells can actually self-renew and multiply, while maintaining the potential to develop into other types of cells. They can become cells of the blood, heart, lungs or organs, even the skin. Stem cells also have a strong secretory function, they promote the formation of new blood vessels, cell differentiation, and inhibit the inflammatory responses. There is an urgent push for research since positive results are being shown when critically ill patients with the COVID-19 virus use stem cell therapy.
Lung function and inflammation have been the main concern with the coronavirus. The damage to lung tissue can be fatal, and stem cell therapy has been shown to help repair the damage. According to our protocols, we can inject stem cells directly into the area of concern. Researchers have typically been injecting the stem cells directly into the lungs. Stem cells injected directly into the lungs have been shown to improve the immunity in the lungs and reduce the risk of pulmonary failure caused by inflammation. This is much like what happens with patients in our office when stem cells are injected into an affected area such as a knee or shoulder. The injection helps decrease internal inflammation while attacking unhealthy cells and beginning the regeneration of new, healthy cells that can heal your body. The widespread use of stem cell technology to treat Covid-19 is still some time away, but we do have some promising research to work from. Stem cell therapy may possibly be the most ideal choice of treatment, or combination of treatment to treat COVID-19 and those affected by it.
Besides healing damaged tissues, stem cells have the incredible ability to regulate the immune system. They are able to shut off pathological responses while preserving the body’s ability to fight off disease. Stem cells, directly attack inflamed tissue and start producing anti-inflammatory agents almost immediately. These “middleman” cells act locally and don’t suppress the immune response of the patient’s entire body. Additionally, stem cells induce the production of Regulatory T-cells, a type of immune cell whose function is to protect the body against self-attack in the immune system. These T-cells are highly adaptable and can mimic almost any function in the body, even increasing cells that help fight off diseases and viruses.
Our body is equipped to handle so much more than we give it credit for, especially if we treat it the way we should. We are taking what our body does naturally and recreating the process to improve debilitating conditions caused by our daily lives. How we take care of our body affects our quality of life. What we put into our bodies and the stresses we put ourselves through affect how we live and how we will continue to live with the only body we’re given. Here are some suggestions to take control of your health:
Eat healthy, whole food, balanced meals. Switch it up sometimes and cut out the processed foods, go for meatless Monday, try a new veggie you haven’t tried before, introduce something new to your kids, let them help you cook, and most importantly eat what makes you feel strong and well.
Make sure you are drinking enough water. It’s fun to even make it a family challenge to see who can drink the most in a day. Eating a variety of whole foods with high water content and hydrating helps balance the pH in your system which can help alkalize your body. Mucus and infection aren’t a fan of duplicating or even attacking a body that is alkaline.
Incorporate foods that are good for your gut health. A balanced gut will do so much for your immunity. Eating fermented foods like sauerkraut or kimchi, drinking beverages such as kombucha or kefir will all deliver a hefty dose of probiotics to your body. We can’t express how important this is and how much it will make a difference in the way you feel day to day.
Make sure you are paying attention to the length and the quality of your sleep. Restful, REM sleep is essential in maintaining optimal health. Turn off the TV, put your cell phone away and get some rest. It’s so difficult to “shut off” in a society that is constantly on the go, but it is a must for your mental and physical health.
Take your vitamins. In our previous blog post, we talked about the top vitamins to include daily in order to boost your immune health. Many of these essential vitamins and minerals can be found in foods that we eat, but you can also take them in supplement form. In a time like this with such a contagious virus running rampant, taking vitamins and supplements can give you more peace of mind because you know for sure the dosage you are getting.
Even if you follow all of our suggestions, it’s possible that your body needs an extra boost to help your immunity. To help our patients stay as healthy as possible, we are offering an array of immune boosting IV infusions. We also offer our existing stem cell therapy packages including IV exosomes. These aren’t just stem cell therapy packages. They are designed to make you stronger, healthier, and feel better.
Stay safe and be mindful of others during this time. There are brighter days ahead!
